[edit] What you need

  • Your DS-Xtreme, disconnected from your DS
  • The USB cable that came with your DS-Xtreme or a similar USB 2.0 cable not USB 1.1
  • A computer running Windows Vista or XP, not MacOS, Linux or Windows Windows 2000, with:
    • A Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. Not USB 1.1 (How to tell) and not a port that is part of a hub.
    • Internet access, the updater will download the OS update from the DS-Xtreme website
    • Anti-virus programs disabled
  • The latest firmware updater: Ds_Xtreme_updater_v1.2.zip
  • The latest skin files: skin1.1.2.rar (needs un-rar'ed)

[edit] Attach your DS-Xtreme to your computer

  • Windows Vista or XP only
  • Use only Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port
  • The USB port should be directly connected to the motherboard, normally the ones at the back of your computer.
  • Disconnect all other USB devices except keyboards and mice, eg. video cameras, card readers, modems
  • When you plug it in the mini-usb port should 'click' in and both lights should illuminate solid white.

[edit] Backup

If you have just got your DS-Xtreme there is no need to back it up, just continue to the next step.

You should always take regular backups of the contents of your DS-X just in case anything goes horribly wrong. You can get fancy and run a daily/weekly/when you want Backup_Script.

As you will be formatting the DS-X during the firmware upgrade process it is critical that you backup all your files NOW!

[edit] Format

  • Open Windows Explorer right click on your DS-X and select 'Format'.
  • Format your DS-X with FAT32 (not FAT/FAT16) using either Windows Explorer or swissknife (4.3Mb Freeware)

[edit] Upgrade

Extract the contents of the updater file (Ds_Xtreme_updater_v1.2) to your hard drive and run the .exe file it contains (Ds_Xtreme_updater_v1.2.exe).

The updater will check the DS-Xtreme web site for the latest firmware version that is available.

Disconnect and reconnect your DS-Xtreme from your computer before going any further.

[edit] Copy new Skin files and Skin Apps (aka 'Public Partition')

Download and extract the skin1.1.2.rar to your computer.
Copy the extracted files to the root of your DS-Xtreme

[edit] Restore

If you backed up files, games, app or music in the first step copy them back to your DS-Xtreme.
Just make sure that you do not copy back any of the below files/folders unless you really know what you are doing:

  • The file in the root of your DS-Xtreme called DS-X Settings.xml one will be autocreated the first time you start your DS-Xtreme after upgrading.
  • The folder called 'skin' which contains the default skins
  • The folder called 'skinapps' which contains the new skin apps.

If you suffered from corrupted files with a previous firmware, do not copy the corrupted files back to your DS-Xtreme.

[edit] Start using your DS-Xtreme

Disconnect your DS-Xtreme from your computer by using the Safely Remove Hardware procedure.
Plug it into your DS.
